Joyce and Maryann were tiny figures down on the pool's edge "Hey!" they waved, "Go Sharon!"
My legs were tightly together, my ankles banded by a padded wrapper and the cord attached to its fittings. I could look at Joyce and Maryann on the path, but I couldn't bring myself to look where the cord snaked over the platform, in a long loop down toward the pool.
"OK," said the guy. "I'm going to count to three, and on three you're going to dive. OK?"
"OK."
"One. Two. Have Fun!"
I stutter-stepped and stopped. Uh NO! This wasn't FUN!
I can't.
The guy sighed. "Sharon, c'mon!" cried Joyce and Maryann from below.
I imagined unwrapping the padding. I imagined walking past the other people in line, climbing down the catwalk, the stairs, the ladders to the pool deck.
I knew the quickest way down.
"Sorry," I said. "Let's try again."
One. Two. Three - I raised up my arms and dove off the tower toward the water 150 feet below, the bungee cord slithering off the platform above me.
***there is a video somewhere of me really doing this.
