We were cleaning out the drawers of the two bedside tables in Mom's bedroom. My nephew will be driving a van full of some of her stuff up to Chicago later this month, so my brother and I were preparing things for him.
One of the things about my parents is that they never threw anything away. We moved seven times between my birth and graduation. Yet even now, Mom's house has things I remember from childhood. And I'm not talking just about china, furniture and keepsakes - I'm talking about the same bathroom wastebasket, the same saucepans, the same cheese grater with the broken handle ("It still works.")
I found this pink florist's note in the table on Dad's side. It had a pressed, crumpled pink grosgrain ribbon attached. This note would have been written in September, 1945.
Dad and Mom met at the University of Texas, when, struggling in Chemistry Lab, he asked the best student in class to help him study. They had a whirlwind romance, and were married in April of 1945. They were together until Dad passed away in early 2002.
When I showed it to Mom, she smiled. He was always buying her flowers back then, she said, even when he couldn't afford them.
Such a warm and beautiful note. Dating back from then must lend it some history as well as longevity - a smiling moment.

ReplyDeleteIn Kansas City, we have the Hereford House Rest.. That place is a steakhouse (nationally known for it's wonderful steaks)and the first one in town (I think there are 3 others now) had a huge cow/bull on top of it that looked like the one you showed in your post! We have lots of Bar B Q spots, but I can't think of a one with a cow like that!

ReplyDeleteHappy Pink Saturday, Thanksgiving, and thanks for visiting my blog!
I've really enjoyed reading your posts about your mother's move. The rose that D sent along for the trip is so sweet and definitely a nice touch of home to bring on a long journey by car. And I like the way you took photos showing the rose along the way :o)
ReplyDeleteI spent the past year and a half emptying my mother's home after she passed away, and found many floral cards and other sentimental mementos (dinner receipts, matchbooks and cocktail napkins, dried corsages, etc.) that belonged to my parents or my grandparents (whose items had been incorporated into my mom's house 25 years ago). I found it very difficult to throw out anything like that, and now have to decide what to do with boxes filled with old letters and memorabilia. It's wonderful that you and your brothers were all involved in your mother's move, it's obvious there's a lot of love in your family.
