We walked into the back doorway of the El Mercado de Los Angeles from the parking lot. I'd never been there before, and the crush of people and the confusion of the parking cars was a little disorienting. We left the car and headed for the first open door - it turned out to be the hallway where you could buy little snacks and refreshments.
I loved the colors in this display of packaged fruits, and another nearby table with vitrolerios of aguas frescas.
So I took some photos. It was difficult, because the crowd was pushing, so I quickly snapped some at random and moved on. When I got home, I found the photo above of the young woman fruit seller, giving change to a customer.
I love the look on her face. I recognize something that I have been, or felt - our shared humanity, womanhood, girlhood. Her expression connects with the man buying fruit, but also conceals an inner, hidden self no one knows but her. She is fully and completely Herself.
