For this Pink Saturday, I'd like you to consider these wonderful mid-century modern European bergeres, upholstered in pale pink leather. They are on display at the L.A. Modernism Show, this weekend in Santa Monica.
They date from the 1940s, and the pink leather upholstery is original, according to the dealer, Christopher Anthony, from Boston. Here's a shot of the back detail:
The L.A. Modernism show features 85 dealers of high quality 20th century arts and antiques, with works of celebrated designers including Lalique, Noguchi, Eames, Wright, Sullivan and Leleu. The pieces are shapely, organic, sensual, and elegant. And many of them are pink!
This painting of bright pink flowers is from the 1950s.
This bright red couch, and two bright pink cubist-inspired paintings.
Hearkening back to an earlier time, this painting by Belgian artist Emile Vloors is titled "Spring", and is priced at $350,000. It's flanked by two beautiful Viennese bentwood chairs.
There are also displays of glassware, silver jewelry from Taxco, Mexico, and wonderful bakelite jewelry. One dealer has a collection of bakelite radios - and they actually work!
But I kept returning to the booth with the pink bergeres. There's something so inviting about the shape of these chairs, and the graceful way the back curves into the arms. Wouldn't you like to sit, for a minute, and imagine you're an smart young thing, enjoying the social scene of Paris in the 30's? Think how elegant you'd look, sipping a sidecar cocktail poured from a sleek aluminum shaker by a dashing young man in formal dress. Let's pretend a little while, this Pink Saturday!
My imagination is sparked! I'll sit down on one of these FAB chairs with a Mai Tai. Care to join me? Happy Pink saturday!
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I'm the opposite of all things pink and modern. I'd rather tuck my legs up under me on a shabby ole chair. But they are as pretty as can be.
ReplyDeleteI'm lovin' those chairs like a hug from Marilyn!
ReplyDeleteAnd, I must say, that exquisite painting would be quite an easy thing to get used to living with!
Those chairs are awesome, and I love pretend. But, I really love those cubist-style paintings.
ReplyDeleteHappy Pink Saturday, Glennis. I'm going to get my drink, and I'll be right back to join you in the chairs.

Excuse me.....is this chair taken? The sun is setting, the breeze has picked up the fragrance of the lavender piled on the flower sellers cart, and the Eiffel tower lights are set to go on any minute now.....I wanted to find just the right spot to sip my drink and take in the view........SNAP!
ReplyDeleteOh, I just wanted to say that the pink chairs have captured my heart. They are so BEAUTIFUL. Thank you for sharing your picture....and Happy Pink Saturday.

The chairs are lovely, although I wouldn't like that color in my home. However, at any color, I wouldn't like that price! Happy Pink Saturday.

Oooohhh...the pink chairs.
ReplyDeleteOK. Give me a minute, here...first of all, I need to imagine my bum small enough to fit neatly, elegantly, into one of those chairs. (About the way it would have in, say, 1972, which will serve as my 1930's. Having arranged that, I need to be wearing something long and slinky. Something...silvery. With cap sleeves, and a tiny fishtail train. So Very 1930's.
OK. I'm ready for my Sidecar. Extra sugar on the rim, please.
What beautiful Pink chairs, I love the shape and detail on them. They are my favorite thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHappy Pink Saturday
Hugs;
Alaura
