Snow Ice Cream

New Kensington, PA, January 1958

Winter has certainly come to the U.S., with blizzards and storms affecting people from El Paso to Vermont. And even though I did a little whining yesterday about cold temperatures, I actually have it pretty easy here in California. It's been a long time since I've seen real snow.

Dad, Brother S and me, January 1958

When I was a little girl and we lived in a place where it snowed, my father took us outside to play in the snow. He taught my little brother and me how to make a snowman.

Me, late 1956 or early 1957

And he taught us how to gather the first freshly fallen snow of the season and make what he would call "Snow Ice Cream."

January 1958

He'd heap a cereal bowl with fresh snow, and sprinkle it with a few teaspoons of white sugar. Then he'd fill a small pitcher or cup with milk and add just a few drops of vanilla extract. Then he'd stir the flavored milk into the sugar and snow, and we'd eat the sweet cold concoction before it melted away.

Delicious! If the weather has brought you snow this week, make some snow ice cream!

  1. CUTE!

When I was little, our Christmastime Mission was to drive to a faraway mountain, hack down the largest tree we could find, and then have little slave children (in lieu of sled dogs) drag the thing back to the station wagon.

Of course, once said tree arrived at the house extensive surgery was required just to get the reason for the season in the door.

    MERRRY EFFFIN CHRISTMAS, PEEPOLE!

  2. Love the photos! Looking at old photos always brings on a burst of reminisences, doesn't it?

I think your snowman looks more like a snow bear!

  3. Oh, G, what a treat to visit you and see this! It is sweet even without the sugar and vanilla. I love these photos, especially that second of you and your snowball. Thanks for this, today, one day after our first road closed snowstorm.
