Weather wimps

There's blizzard conditions in Minnesota. It's coming down in Kansas City. There's sleet at O'Hare. There's even snow in Texas.

I know folks out there are dealing with some tough winter conditions. You've got to scrape your windshields, shovel your sidewalks, put chains on your tires.... it's grueling. You deserve all the sympathy you can get.

But who will pity us, the California weather wimps? A cold snap catches us unprepared. It was 29 degrees Fahrenheit this morning, folks, and we're not used to this kind of thing!!

Oh, you may think it's rough, tackling snowdrifts and blizzards. But you have parkas and boots and snow-mobiles and heated car-seats! Here we are, tender and weak, quivering like shaved chinchillas in our uninsulated houses, with our thin and flimsy shoes and our cotton cardigans. This morning, I went out to walk the dog in yoga pants and vans sneakers, and I'll tell you, I could see my breath in the air! I thought I was going to freeze!

I think it's worse for us Californians because our lives are designed for warmth, in complete denial of the possibility of cold. Our hats are for wearing backwards, not for covering our ears. Our windows are jalousied, not double-glazed! Our water heaters live in unheated carports! We have to take our potted orchids inside!

Do you know I had to dig in my dresser drawers to find SOCKS to wear? This morning my co-worker said she had to rummage through a bag of shoes ready to go to Goodwill so she could find some with closed toes!

Will no one pity us poor Californians?

  1. Oh you poor thing...socks? How horrible. We have a winter storm headed at us. So far, just lots of rain today, but the temps are supposed to be horrible tomorrow. The windchill somewhere around 15 below. I hate it...I'm heading south next week!

  2. You are not kidding!! It is "miserable" around here. Haven't come close to 29F though. Helps to sleep in.

Never thought I'd become one of those "It's a depressing madhouse filled w/ phonies & maniacs, but at least the weather's nice" types, but I should have known better.

  3. At least Jack seems cut out for the cold weather...it was in the teens this morning up here, and our Labs were decked out in fleece jackets for their morning walk. Talk about wimps!

  4. My son needed to scrape ice off of his windshield yesterday morning.

Except we live here and don't own a scraper.

  5. Well of course NOT! As a Santa Monica native, I know that Beach Wimps can't the handle cold of Winter or the humidity of Summer. And since it was 5° degrees this a.m. when I left for work, having not taken a shower because our well froze, um, nope, no pity for you. And mostly because when it's 85° on Christmas Day, you'll be braggin'! Love you G! Blessings, Shay

PS to KathyR, try a credit card as a substitute scraper.
