Weekly Jack
Why do dogs eat grass?
Sometimes dogs eat grass as an emetic if they have upset tummies, to make them vomit.
It's not clear whether the chemistry of the grass itself causes dogs to throw up, or whether it's the texture of the leaves tickling the back of their throats that sets off the gag reflex.
Our vet through the years have also said it means they are lacking something from their diet, but I have noticed when our dog Lady chews on grass it always seems to be the long thin light colored grass only...we'll probably never really know for sure...I've never had a dog really throw up from it but I know they have! Your doggie is so sweet!
I've given up trying to figure out why my dogs eat ANYTHING. (And by that, I mean everything!) And why is it that when cats throw up, they feel they must do it on the most expensive carpet in the house? Hope Jack's feeling better!
My cats (I had two, one I got when I was 6 and one after college when I had lived in NYC for a few years).
ReplyDeleteBoth LOVED grass. Probably for the same reasons?

ReplyDeleteMine only eats grass to make herself sick...when we see her eating grass, we leave her outside for a while.
ReplyDeleteWhen we had dogs, grass meant they'd throw up (soon). My cat eats grass but doesn't vomit; he just enjoys the greenery. Who knows why?
