PrompTuesday

I've return to the wonderful and creative writing exercise presented by San Diego Momma - PrompTuesdays. These have spurred my creativity, and have been a lot of fun at the same time.

Each Tuesday, she posts a writing prompt. Participants play by the following rules:
  • You must write your entry in 10 minutes. This encourages top-of-mind, primal thinking before the ego and judgmental brain kicks in. Just set a timer, make your kid count to 600 slowly, whatever. It’s an honor system. And I trust you.  
  • Keep to 150 words or less (sorry, I ran over a bit!)
  • Post on your blog or in her comments so everyone can read it. 
  • Have fun!
This Tuesday, the prompt is: Write in the style of an unreliable narrator. Take an unremarkable incident or phase in your life and turn it into something BIG, something over the top, something EXTRAORDINARY.

 I thought about it a second, and came up with this:

MOTHER'S CATERING
PROPOSAL - THE SCHOOL LUNCHBAG
Thanks for choosing Mother’s Catering. We have years of experience feeding an all-age clientele with the most discerning palates and demanding tastes. We use the finest ingredients and prepare your meal exactly to your specifications in our sparkling clean, state-of-the-art kitchen.

We’ve justly earned a reputation for the quirky presentations of our meals. The School Lunchbag is served in its own handy carrier of recyclable dye-free fiber-based material – the natural color compliments any decor. Note the detail of an intricately “pinked” edging at carrier’s opening.

We start with creamy cow’s milk yogurt, flavored with farm-grown strawberries –secured from one of the nation’s finest purveyors. Presented in its own unique container, a classically-styled white vessel, imprinted with a message that cleverly yet ironically hearkens to the recipe ingredients. Served with matching utensil.

Crudités follow - healthful locally-grown raw vegetables cut into slender uniform julienne. Accompanied by red-ripe cherry tomatoes, they are served in a see-through wrapper, whose interlocking closure has been hailed as an example of innovative industrial design.

The main course sandwich presents freshly baked whole-grain artisanal bread lavishly spread with a rich puree of toasted peanuts. You may opt for a finely-ground spread or one more textured with small bits of nutmeat. It’s paired with a deep, purple grape jelly lending a bright and vibrant note of fruit as a contrast to the rich nuts. The sandwich – carefully sliced into triangles - is served in a larger version of the wrapper used for the crudités, in continuity with the overarching theme.

For dessert -  two dark, rich chocolate baked confections, gently enfolding white sweet-cream filling.

Finally, a ripe, fresh-picked Washington State apple, to be served in its natural state (peel-on).

Beverages may be purchased at your dining location or decanted from the drinking fountain in the hallway.

Please note: As this is a meal on-the-go, we do not provide a floral centerpiece.

  1. Well, geez, now I'm hungry! Don't you just want to shove the bag over their head when they whine, "That's what we're having?!" (In a totally sweet and non violent way, of course). :)
