A pull over moment

This morning while driving on Pacific Coast Highway, I had a "pull over the car" moment. Just past Castle Rock, the sea was thick with a flock of pelicans, gulls and some kind of seabird.

I pulled over onto the shoulder and walked down to the sand to watch them. It must have been a truly arresting sight, because at least four other people did the same.

Another bird watcher
While driving I'd been thinking about emails and spreadsheets and unfinished tasks. Down on the sand, all that went right out of my head. The pelicans floated on the waves and then as the surf broke beneath them, they flew above the foaming breakers. Then they turned and wheeled right back down to the water, plunging their beaks in to take a fish.

The sky was swirled with gray clouds and mist, foretelling this week's coming rain, and the sea was a translucent green.

Though it made me late for work, that five minutes on the beach made the day better.

When was the last time you had a "pull over moment?" If it's been too long, take one today.

  2. Incredible!
I had a pull-over moment over the weekend: trees with apple blossoms, the lake/river beyond, and the mountains in the distance. I not only had to pull over, I had to make a couple of u-turns to get there! But it was worth it.
