Just desserts

I just heard from Human Resources how I did on the test I took last week. As I expected, due to my colossal dumb mistake, I didn't make the cut.

Is it better to fail because you did something dumb, than it is to fail because you actually didn't know the material well enough? Or is it worse to know you could have aced it except you did something stupid? You tell me. I need some kinda fiction to make me feel better.

Can I have a margarita now?

  2. You're too kind. No, the dumb thing was me not turning over the last page to complete the last nine questions.

You were under a lot of pressure, and that tends to cause people to make mistakes. Next time you have to take a standardized exam, have that margarita beforehand.

For the record, my mom always kept a bottle of Kümmel in the house for medicinal purposes (it doesn't really taste that good, so it's not the kind of thing to drink for pleasure). Both times I took the SATs, I felt under the weather, so I took a shot of Kümmel beforehand. I scored high enough to get into my first choice college, early admission.

Definitely have a single drink before the next test... takes the edge off.

  5. An excellent idea. May I join you?

I'm going with the thought that it was not the right job for you or they would have seen right past that mistake.

  6. No, Karen, they would not have seen past the mistake. It's a civil service exam - it's completely score-based.

Although, I don't quibble with your suggestion that it wasn't the right job for me.
