Last weekend was the annual Art Walk in Culver City. We joined in.
When you think of "Hollywood" - that glamorous world of movie-making, big studios, and the film industry - you really should be thinking "Culver City." Culver City is a small municipality in Los Angeles County, and it is the historic home of MGM Studios. Today, Sony Pictures is a major industry in Culver City.
Culver City is also a booming scene for arts, architecture, music and food. This cafe is perfectly located right along with walk.

The Art Walk featured open galleries and also performance art, including "Giggle and Pop!" a performance featuring characters from Gary Baseman's drawings and paintings. The pink cherubic ChouChous were each accompanied by a Wild Girl, as an escort along the walk route.
Of the ChouChou character, Baseman says: "Basically, ChouChou takes all one’s negative energy and hate away, absorbs it, and excretes it as creamy gooey love."
I thought they were pretty cute.
There was plenty of positive energy on the Art Walk. Here, an artist creates a masterpiece while you watch.
Dinosaurs and gas pumps - is he trying to tell us something?
These parasols are part of a project called L.A. Goal, to encourage people with developmental disabilities enjoy their creative skills.

How would you like this pink octopus chandelier? I want one!!
This one is a little edgy, too. By Herakut, it's titled, "When life give you the boot, ask for salt."
Perhaps this exuberant floral painting is more to your taste? It's by artist Jane Pope.
The occasion brought out other artists. Here a troupe of costumed actors strolls the walk route to get the word out about their latest production. In some galleries, DJs spun or musicians played. The route was full of people of all generations, from wheelchairs to racing strollers.
Sculptural works with colorful transparencies were based on musical principles, and even played their own soundtracks.
This huge panel with images of Buddha was displayed in the parking lot of a furniture store.
There are so many different galleries in this part of town, and many working studios for artists. You never know what you might find. Are there neighborhood art events where you live? Have you let yourself explore them?
You do live in an interesting spot! The art was fascinating. Not all was to my taste, but I liked the exuberant flowers, and that octopus chandelier!! You can't have it, I want it!
ReplyDeleteReally, there was somet hing for everyone there, wasn't there!
Glad you took me along on this trip to Culver City. Looks like a fun place to go.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm sorry we missed that! Culver City has experienced such a renaissance. When we first moved here over 14 years ago, we used to joke that they rolled up the sidewalks at 6, and that tumbleweeds rolled down the street on Saturday nights. We love our little burgh!
ReplyDeleteLOVE that octopus chandelier!
Happy Pink Saturday, Glennis. I'm so happy you are here today.

Culver City is a very nice place for an art show. No matter what our taste in art seems to be, art in any form is interesting. Thanks for the tour.
