Power outage, Southern California

Warning - snarky political commentary ahead.

Here we are in Topanga, CA, on a hot steamy night. Our fans are running, our room air-conditioner is cooling our bedroom, and I have a nice lit lamp and power to my laptop to type this post. South of us, in San Diego County and Orange County, and parts of Arizona, there's a massive power outage. Los Angeles County is not really impacted.

A week ago, of course, there was an earthquake, centered in Mineral, Virginia - the Congressional District represented by Republican Whip Eric Cantor.  Then a hurricane devastated parts of the Eastern Seaboard, most notably the Carolinas and Virginia. For the most part, it spared liberal and decadent New York City, though. A tropical storm dropped rain on the Gulf Coast, causing floods in Louisiana and Mississippi and even up into Pennsylvania - but pooped out just before bringing some desperately needed rain to fire-ravaged Texas.

With all these natural disasters, some politicians presumed to have some inside knowledge, and claimed that God was trying to send a message. One Republican presidential candidate quoted God as saying, "Are you going to start listening to me here?"

Topanga, CA is part of Congressional District 30, where our power's on. Henry Waxman (D) is our Representative to Congress. Power's on in District 35, Maxine Waters' (D) District.

The power's out in Darrell Issa's (R) District, Brian Bilbray's (R) District. The power's out in Duncan Hunter's (R) District. The power's out in Ken Calvert's (R) District. This is no joke - it's been running over 100 degrees Fahrenheit the last couple of days. People are suffering, whether they're trapped in steamy tenement apartments or in the San Diego Ritz Carlton Hotel.

Maybe God's sending a message that a little spending on infrastructure AND JOBS might do you guys good, what do you say? Maybe you are gonna start listening?

  1. Ha ha ha! I LOVE it! The Bachman comment irritated me to no end. Maybe you're right! Rational should win over crazy every time!

  3. Seems straighforward to me: One L announces she's running for Pretzeldent, God sends an earthquake and a hurricane to go along with the drought.

  4. Way to shed some pertinent light on an impertinent comment. Love the sunset picture, by the way. You've got a gorgeous view.

  5. Ironic about the GOP reps' district being without power. Divine justice working in mysterious ways?

  6. Uh, actually, we weren't suffering so much. We were sitting outside on a lovely evening with a glass of wine, watching the stars and the moon. And, this being San Diego, there was no looting or mugging going on. I think we did pretty well.

  7. Sewing Librarian - I'm glad that it turned out to be okay, and they got the power on again quickly.
