Super super Sunday

On the Sunday closest to St. Joseph's Day, New Orleans' Mardi Gras Indians come out to parade in their finery for the first time after Mardi Gras Day. This year, Super Sunday, as it's called, was clear, brisk, breezy and sunny.

Other demands press, and I don't have the time to tell you all about it until later. But I can show you some of the photos I took, and ask you to patiently await what I hope to write later! Click any photo to embiggen."

What is amazing, and heartening to me, is the involvement of the next generation - sometimes very young children - to carry on this tradition.

Thank you to all the families and community groups who support this important New Orleans tradition. And - ain't they pretty?

This series of essays by Wayne Curtis for The American Scholar might interest you. He is a resident so presumably he knows where-of he writes:

I didn't know of the Mardi Gras Indians until I read your earlier posts. I love New Orleans but don't think I could take the Mardi Gras crowds. Good to know that I could plan a trip later and still see the Indians. Great photos!
