What is it?
These ugly, top-knotted wrinkly lumps are Sumo oranges. A cross between Satsumas and ordinary oranges, the variety was developed in Japan and became very popular in that country and in Korea, where they are often given as gifts.
We found these in a Koreatown supermarket, and had to try them.
Their funny, crinkled skins peel like a charm and the fruit inside is candy-sweet!
So get ugly!

Love citrus.
I've noticed that the marketing whiz-kidz that feed off the tech startups that pop up every other day around here get enamored with one color for a while, before declaring it 'so last Thursday' and collectively falling in love with another one.
A couple years ago all the new tech companies embraced a garish orange for corp ID, websites and logos. Coming, as it did, on the heels of a brief infatuation with lime green the result was something bright and yet sickly, the collateral material equivalent of a toxic chemical spill.
Appropos of nothing, I suppose, but that's what your post made me think of.
Do carry on...
A lot of hybrid citrus fruits tend to be ugly, or should I say ugli?
They had these at my grocery store recently. I was tempted to try them. If they still have them this week, I'm going to get a couple.
