Jack is shedding. Malamutes shed their undercoat in spring, and Jack is no exception.
The hair just comes off him in clumps. I take him out on the deck and brush him, and the hair floats away on the wind. The birds in Topanga are going to have very warm and fluffy nests this spring.
Jack's hair comes off in clumps if you pull gently at the tufts around his neck and shoulders. He likes the brush, but the pulling sometimes makes him turn and give you a look.

I've had several Great Pyrenees dogs. Their under coat would always need some extra care. I used a great brush that would hook the undercoat and comb it out. I hope you have something like that to make the task more effective.
Did read about using hair (animal & human) to help absorb oil slicks?
Does he moult just once a year? One of our dogs was a "shedder" all year round - drove me crazy!

Even our beagle sheds a couple times a year. She doesn't like the brush...so it is a real chore to keep up with her.

My husband "plucks" the cat in much the same way; however, I suspect the birds are not as fond of cat hair in their nests...
