Your most compelling business letter? (12 years later and I can still write them from memory.) Better still...Your best blog post? Your travel writing is wonderful!
I submitted a few short pieces I had written for a non-profit's newsletter (a place where I previously worked). But I'd agree that your travel stories are superb!
Just a suggestion, as I've never had to do this either, but I would see if I could find any examples of the type of writing the company uses. Then I would do a clean, concise version of it. But, Aunt Snow, any of your travel pieces or anything you've written about LA would show them how awesome you are.
Usually something you've written in a previous job -- in my case: newsletters, solicitation letters, annual reports, etc. More recently: Blog posts and newspaper articles.
I submitted a report that I'd helped prepare as part of an investigation. Very dry, very businesslike. It would have been inappropriate to submit a haiku.

I am not qualified to answer that one, but I'll check back to see what others have to say.

Depends on the job.

do they mean 'hand writing' sample or writing sample? I would say the thing you have most passion about if it is writing ... Patricia
