The Jardin du Luxembourg is a large park in the center of Paris, on the Rive Gauche, or left bank of the Seine. It lies between the Latin Quarter and Montparnasse.
It is the "simple garden" for the Luxembourg Palace, built in 1615 for Queen Marie de Medici. Today the Palace is the home of the French Senate and the gardens are the largest public park in town. There are playgrounds, flower gardens, orchards; a water basin where children float boats; a marionette theatre, cafes and other attractions.
But one of the favorite pastimes of Parisians in the gardens - if appearances can be believed - is to sit on one of the light green chairs, propping one's feet on another chair, and reading in the gentle summer sun.
A stroll through the gardens on a still-cool July morning brings the sight of dozens of quiet readers - or perhaps nappers - under the shade of the huge chestnut trees.
Won't you pull up a chair and join them?
