One lives, one reads and one learns. "Oak-leaf duff". For a moment there I thought you were being personal! Never heard the expression before.

Marvelously evocative and beautifully written.
To come down with a thud, we used to live next door to a pop singer who would arrive home from weeknight gigs at 12.30 am and practice for an hour. The very low hum of a room ioniser in our bedroom lulled our brains into not hearing any outside noise including a loud soprano. Apparently the brain locks onto the ambient sound and ignores everything else. We now live where our nearest neighbour is a kilometre away (not cause and affect!).
