Do you like licorice candy? Do you like Good & Plenty?
Good & Plenty candy was first produced by the Quaker City Confectionery Company in Philadelphia in 1893 and is the oldest branded candy in the United States. Choo Choo Charlie first appeared in TV ads in 1960.
Do you remember the words to the Good & Plenty candy theme song?
Once upon a time there was an engineerCharlie rattled a box of Good & Plenty for the sound of the train, and blew through the box to make the whistle. Charlie's girlfriend sits in the back of the train with her dog, interjecting "Charlie says," as he sings.
Choo Choo Charlie was his name, we hear.
He had an engine and he sure had fun
He used GOOD & PLENTY candy to make his train run.
Charlie says "Love my GOOD & PLENTY!"
Charlie says "Really rings my bell!"
Charlie says "Love my GOOD & PLENTY!"
Don't know any other candy that I love so well!
Licorice bites are given a shell by a process called panning, where a sugar syrup is tumbled with the candy, then dried and colored. The pink color comes from the pigment carmine, or cochineal, which comes from the bodies of insects - so Good & Plenty candy isn't for vegans. But they are certified Kosher.
Crafters and decorators often call the color combination of pink, white, and black "Good and Plenty."
In 1973, the Warner-Lambert Company bought Good & Plenty, and made it until 1982, when Beatrice Foods bought it and moved to St. Louis. In 1983, Huhtamaki Oy of Helsinki, Finland purchased Leaf Brands, the confectionery division of Beatrice Foods. In 1996, Hershey Foods Corporation bought Leaf from Huhtamaki Oy.
If you like licorice, you're lucky. Licorice is just plain good for you. It's an expectorant, an antiviral/antifungal and it contains antioxidants. Studies show it effective in healing cold sores, peptic uclers, and easing the symptoms of PMS.
I like to eat Good & Plenty when I go to the movies - I guess it brings back memories of matinees when I was a kid. Mmmm!! Have some Good & Plenty!
Notice to all Pinkies - I will be traveling this weekend, and I may not have access to an internet connection. I'll try to visit you later in the week if I can.

They look like pills - but unlike medicines these ones are yummy :-) Then again if they help with cold sores PMS (:-) ) and other stuff ---- a yummy pill indeed!
Happy Pink Saturday!
I look forward to your Pink Saturday posts!
Good & Plenty is a classic. I don't remember the song though. I'll have to Google it because now I'm curious to hear the melody.
They look so pretty in bowls too!
I don't like Good and Plenty but I do like the tradition of it. I suffer through it. And now that I know it helps with PMS I'm buying stock!
At initial glance, I thought that you had taken a photo to commemorate "Valley of the Dolls" ... but, even better! - licorice!!!
Wonderful!

Have a great Pink Saturday!
Good and Plenty is my most favorite candy. It is the candy I would ask for if it was the last I could have. I always eat all the white ones first, always. Then save the pink for last, they are the best. My family tells me there is no difference, but try it, there is, Happy Pink Saturday, Char
I do remember them and the song too. I never liked them, but my husband did. Thanks for sharing. Happy Pink Saturday.

Love the Good and Plentys and I remember that song vividly! Happy Pink Saturday!
One of my favorite candies! AND I remember making a whistle out of the box. They make the boxes differently these days, so no more whistles!

Wonderful Pink Saturday post!!! Really love the history behind the famous candy. Your blog is delightful and I've been a bit sidetracked reading about L.A. My grandfather worked on the trolleys and I worked there in the 80's. Enjoyed reminiscing and seeing the classic L.A. architecture photos. Excellent reading, I'll be back....
Hubs and daughter both love Good and Plenty, honey, but I won't kiss either one of them while they're eating them! I can't stand the smell of licorice, sweetpea!
xoxo and happy pink saturday,
Connie
Happy Pink Saturday!
I use to always buy Good and Plenty and JuJu fruits when we went to Sunday afternoon Matinees. I spent the rest of the evening trying to get the juju fruits from around my teeth. HAHA
Happy Pink Saturday.

Trying to visit blogs between thunderstorms today (Spring is here) Happy Pink Saturday ~ Susan
LOVE Good and Plentys! In fact...I wrote that in my yearbook under "Activities" lmao!
I've never heard of Good & Plenty, I don't think we have it over here. But then, I don't like licorice! :D
I liked those too, and good and fruity---we could get them at the ocean when I was 6 and I would be planning it and finding pennies all week!
I used to love those candies, but now prefer dark chocolate, which is also very good for you. LOL Happy pink day!
Oh, Now I want some. I don't like to eat them but I love to decorate my Kitchen with candy in jars or bowls. What a good Pink Saturday!
Hugs, Lisa
My friend and I were recently talking about how we as human beings are so hooked onto electronics. Reading this post makes me think back to that discussion we had, and just how inseparable from electronics we have all become.
I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Societal concerns aside... I just hope that as technology further advances, the possibility of uploading our brains onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's a fantasy that I dream about every once in a while.
