This year's pan de muerto


Here's this year's pan de muerto - I ordered it earlier this week from Panaderia Antequeria, and we picked it up fresh this morning.

The bakery was quite busy this morning, and we waited a while to get to the front of the line. While we waited, a young boy from the family that ran the bakery circulated among the patrons, offering trick-or-treat candy from a plastic pumpkin bucket.

When we got our loaf, the icing was still fresh and gooey, and came off on my fingers all the way home.

We cut a couple slices and ate it fresh with our coffee.

Delicious. A sweet yeast-raised egg bread - like brioche - flavored with anise, cinnamon, and orange rind. Tomorrow's breakfast.

That bread sounds absolutely wonderful!

I wrote a long comment on your last post, buty my computer had a hissy fit, and it all got lost! I said something like how foreign your part of the world sounded, though I suppose with Mexico just "down the road" it would have a lot of influence. But its not just Mexico, you tell us all about where you live and what you do, and it sounds so, well, exciting! I suppose, considering you are a pretty bit ocean and a very large continent away, this is not surprising.

But it does make me wish I could travel more, see these places. Not just in pictures, but smell them, feel them, even be part of them for a while! Travel programmes and books are all very well, but they rarely get into the places. You live there, you speak to the little boys with the buckets, eat the breads, live the feel. And I am truly grateful!

Anyone else feeling they've left it all too late??

That is one huge bread and fully decorated too! Very interesting. I don't think I've ever seen one before so this is interesting.

November 1, yup, the cemetery is definitely full of people. It happens that it falls on a Sunday so while going home from church and passing one, . . . yup, lots of people. :-)

I could never wait until morning! That sucker would be gone after one episode of Criminal Minds!

We have a local Italian bakery which makes a similar bread for Easter - with an egg instead of the saint's head. I love the saint's head!
